Le Metier de Beaute: Why I’ve Decided Not to Resubscribe

With next month being the final month of the second year of the Le Metier de Beaute subscription service, I thought now would be the perfect time to explain why I have decided not to renew my sub.

Le Metier de Beaute is a high-end brand that is found in stores like Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus and Barney’s. They are well known for their beautiful kaleidoscopes and the couches de couleurs method of building beautiful colors by layering. The subscription service require a large initial purchase of $350 and lasts for an entire year (August-July). If you break it down, it comes to $30 a month which is comparable to other services. Each month you get at least one full size product, but usually 2-3. Considering their products retail for $25-$125, you definitely get a good monetary value.

However, when it comes to the actual value of the products  we received  this year, I feel like the value wasn’t there. For starters, we got a lot of eyeshadows- either kaleidoscopes or singles. I love eyeshadow as much as the next girl, but I only need so much. At one point it felt like every month was another shadow. I had the service the first year too and I felt they did an amazing job with the variety of products (I don’t have a write up, but Anastasia from Glamorable wrote a great one here). This second year was really lacking with variety.

Another thing that really bothered be was I felt they were off-loading a lot of old product on us. Multiple times I would look up the product either to link it here or just to see searches, and learn the product came out in 2013! I just don’t like the idea that I’m paying big bucks for products they want to get rid of- especially when one of their selling points was the chance to try their new, not-yet released products.

With those points in mind, I will go through all 11 months of year 2 and reiterate why I am canceling my subscription.

August 2014

In August, the first month, everyone received an total look kaleidoscope (I think it was called After Dark), which has two eye shadows, a blush and a bronzer.  As a bonus gift for people renewing our subscription, we received a loose powder. I think the eyeshadow colors are very me and wearable, and the powder has great reviews.

September 2014

In September, we received the Peau Vierge Anti-Aging ComplexeMine was in shade 2, which was actually a good fit for me. However, this product made me break out like crazy so I gave it to my sister, hence why I don’t have any photos of it!

October 2014

In October we received another kaleidoscope, this one called Goldfinger. I don’t love the colors as they’re a bit too bright for me. However, I have seen reviews of this and they really look amazing when layered.

November 2014

In November,  we received a black and white LMdB makeup bag (not pictured) and 2 dualistic lip pencils. I’m not a big lip pencil person so I was happy to add these to my collection as they’re both very wearable nude colors.

December 2014

In December,  we received two single eyeshadows that came in festive metallic cases instead of in the regular black cases. The colors are a Deep Emerald Green & Shimmery Sand-White. I love the shimmery color as it’s perfect for the inner corner of eyes and under the brow. The green is a very pretty color that I use when I want to have a darker eye look.

January 2015

In January,  we received a shimmery, coral blush & kabuki brush. I love blush and I actually like this color a lot. It’s very bright or too shimmery so it’s very wearable. I already had one of these brushes from last year and I love it, so I was so happy to get another one!

February 2015

In February we received the blushing bronzed duet in Romeo & Juliet. I love both blush and bronzer so I was happy to see this. I’ve read reviews that they look great swirled together, which I haven’t done, but look forward to experimenting with. I found reviews of this dating back to 2010 which is a bit puzzling.

March 2015

In March, we received two lip glosses– one was a shimmery clear color and the other is a pink creme. I’m not a huge lip gloss fan, but I was happy to see a different type of product.

April 2015

In April, we all got two nail polishes and an eyeshadow single although colors varied widely. I received a blue & brown nail polish & bright blue single eyeshadow. I actually received a very similar brown polish last year, which was from a collection in 2013.

May 2015

In May we received the Sexy Eye palette.  I wrote up a full review here, but to summarize, I wasn’t thrilled with this palette. It’s a fine palette, but at this point I had already received so many eyeshadows. Plus, this looks like a product they were giving away as a gift with purchase…

June 2015

In June, I was so excited to get a skincare item- the Instant Line Perfecting Serum. I really like skincare, and LMdB has a good reputation for skin care so I’m really excited to use this.

Although I’ve listed many negative points in this post, I obviously loved the subscription or I would not have signed up for year two. I do think as your first exposure to the brand, it is absolutely amazing. But once you get a kaleidoscope or two (or..6. Yes,  I have 6 of them now), you don’t need anymore. If we had gotten more variety like last year, and more new products instead of their older stocks, I would have jumped at the chance to sign up again. I decided it’s just not for me and I can use that money elsewhere. Are you planning/did you already subscribe to this?
