Brass Clothing

Have you shopped Brass Clothing yet? They have a similar mindset as Cuyana’s “fewer, better pieces”, in that the pieces are higher quality, and therefore longer lasting than stores such as F21 and H&M, but at reasonable prices so you can build a long-lasting wardrobe. Brass started with just dresses but over the past year have started to expand into shirts and other separates. In fact, just last week I received an email with the following note:

  • We’ve introduced Real Models: Over 150 of our customers and supporters have signed up to model our clothes on the website! Check out an example here. You’ll now find more images of Real Models on the product pages.
  • We’re taking chic and easy to a whole new level with the Closet Kit: 4 core pieces that can easily be mixed and matched. Multiple outfits, minimal effort at 10% off normal price.
  • We’ve finally added separates and women are in love. Check out the Ponte PantsWhite Blouse and Chambray Shirt.

I like shopping just as much as the next girl, but lately I’ve been intrigued by the idea of a capsule wardrobe and Brass is the brand to get me there (I’m a little obsessed with their closet kit, especially the ponte pants and chambray shirt, which pair so well together as you can see in the photo below!)

I had the pleasure of sitting down with Katie, one of the co-founders, the last week I was in Boston. During my visit, I got to learn a little about the history of Brass as well as get a sneak peak at some of the items that are now on their website. And of course, I had to buy a few items to jumpstart my new wardrobe 🙂
The two co-founders, Katie and Jay were friends from high school. After college Jay, with a background in design and textiles, was working in apparel sourcing and manufacturing while Katie worked in e-commerce for a $25M company. Katie wanted her wardrobe to reflect her position, but had a hard time building it without having to spend a lot of money. During one of Jay’s business trips, she found a manufacturing company and she was very impressed with their quality (they were producing products for brands such as Vince, BCBG and Theory), but was shocked by their markup. Therefore, in 2014, Jay and Katie decided to put their skills together and start Brass. Within 6 months, they were up and running and selling products, all while working full-time jobs! Initially, they just made dresses as it’s an entire outfit- you only need to add accessories, but they knew they always wanted to expand to separates. In the two years since they’ve started, they’ve grown really quickly with a store that sells dresses, tops, and now pants.
For my first purchase, I went with the Tank Maxi Dress, Sweater Dress and Boatneck Tank. These are all versatile pieces that can be worn year round.

After seeing the Tank Maxi dress, I knew I wanted it, but I was a little concerned about the fit. I am short and busty,  so I knew I wanted to get the XS but I was afraid the zipper would make it too tight in the chest area. But it doesn’t! It makes it snug but still super comfortable. I also loved that there was a second layer in the skirt that goes to about mid-thigh to make sure its not see-through. The XS was the perfect length for my 5’4″ height- it barely skimmed the floor without dragging. Did I mention it has pockets? Such a genius addition to a maxi dress! I love this maxi dress and will definitely by it in other colors.

The Boatneck Tank is different from what I normally wear- I’m a v-neck type of girl, but it is so flattering! It is  slim fit, so definitely size up if you want a looser fit, but it is form fitting without being overly tight or clingy which really accentuates your curves. It comes in a light gray that is very neutral and goes with everything. I hope they make it in white and black as this one has already become a staple in my closet!

The last piece I got was the Sweater Dress, which unfortunately, they are no longer selling, although I’m sure they’ll bring it back for the fall/winter months. I think this is the perfect sweater dress- it has a good weight, which allows it to provide warmth without being bulky, it’s form fitting without being overly sexy so it can be worn out on the town or to work, and it has long sleeves. I love the charcoal color of the dress as that makes it even more versatile.

Have you tried anything from Brass Clothing? What piece(s) will you be picking up?

  • I’ve not heard of this brand but the pieces you showcased are RIGHT up my alley! I’d wear every single one of those pieces. This is like capsule dressing. Love it! I just searched on their site and they do ship to Canada – yay! 😀

    • Yes! It’s meant for capsule dressing! If you order anything, I would love to hear your thoughts on the pieces!
