Brand Spotlight: the Balm

Being a Bay Area native, I am always drawn to companies from California, or better yet, the Bay Area. the Balm is one of those companies, headquartered in Alameda, CA. The icing on the cake is that this is an amazing brand of which I own many many products (and always find myself wanting more!). They have a “beauty in five minutes” philosophy, so their are multi-use, and paraben and cruelty-free. Over the years, I have amassed a collection of facial products, eye products and lip products, so today I will be sharing my faves from this brand.

Cheeks

In my opinion, the brand is best known for their cheek products, in particular the Manizer sistersMary-Lou Manizer, Cindy-Lou Manizer and Betty-Lou Manizer. Each of these doubles as a cheek product and shadow, which makes them great multi-use products. They are finely  milled shimmer powders that give you the perfect lit-from-within glow. Mary-Lou is honey-champagne perfect for cheekbone highlighting, Cindy-Lou is a peachy-pink that looks wonderful as a subtle highlight/blush, and Betty-Lou is a bronzing shimmer that gives you a sun-kissed glow. In addition to the shimmer cheek products, the matte products are wonderful as well. Bahama Mama is a matte bronzer that doesn’t have any orange undertones. I think it is a great dupe for the more expensive Benefit Hoola Bronzer. All of the cheek products come in very generous sizes that are sure to last a long time.

Face

I am very picky when it comes to face products, but my all around love for the brand convinced me to at least try some of their face products. The Balm Shelter Tinted Moisturizer has SPF 18 and comes in a decent range of shades. The nice thing about tinted moisturizers is they are pretty sheer which means you can easily blend it out if it’s not a perfect match. This does a good job at evening out the complexion while also providing sun protection.

Eyes

In addition to the Nude ‘Tude Palette (reviewed in detail here), I also own Put A Lid On It Eyelid Primer and Batter Up Long Wearing Eyeshadow Stick in Shutout. This is the first eyelid primer I have ever used, so I don’t have anything to compare to. However, a little goes a long way and the squeeze tube makes it possible to dispense exactly how much you need, and it works well to keep makeup in place. The eyeshadow has become my favorite the Balm product since buying it on a whim in March. During the week, I need quick and easy to apply makeup as I never give myself enough time to get ready. Shutout is a golden bronze color that looks wonderful on, and wears all day with no creasing.

Lips

Read My Lips, Bam! is probably one of my most used glosses (and I’m not a gloss person, so that fact that I use this frequently is saying a lot!). It feels great on my lips and has good color payoff. TheBalm Girls Lipstick, Foxxy Pout is a bronzy mauve with a slight metallic sheen to it, that doesn’t translate to my lips. Meet Matt(e) Hughes, Committed is another one of their cult products, and for good reason. It’s the perfect matte lipstick that dries matte but doesn’t dry out your lips causing them to crack. It has amazing staying power and they come in so many great colors!

If you’re interested in trying any of these the Balm products, keep an eye out- they frequently have 50% off site-wide sales making the products super affordable!

  • I used to be iffy on TheBalm because of the packaging. I lumped it together with Benefit but I’ve since gotten more into TheBalm – they have some gems! I LOVE their InStain blushes – I highly recommend them if you haven’t tried them. I own all the colours! Their eye shadow palettes are really nice too.
I’ve been wanting to try The Balm Shelter tinted moisturizer for ages. Great brand overview!
